I am 100% dissatisfied with my experience at the entrance exam for the BA Contemporary Dance programme at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. I am only reviewing the audition process, as that is the only experience I had with the institution.
First of all, the English language requirement (IGCSE, IB, or equivalent) has a very high minimum grade just to be eligible to apply. For an international performing arts programme, this felt unnecessarily restrictive.
During the audition itself, a significant amount of Spanish was spoken by the staff, which could easily make non-Spanish speaking candidates uncomfortable or confused in what is supposed to be an English-language programme.
The ballet class also included some questionable technical instructions. For example, there were moments where the arm positioning during turns from fifth position did not align with standard classical ballet technique. This raises concerns about the level of technical clarity being demonstrated in an exam setting.
The contemporary section of the audition was also questionable. It was described as being based on “release technique,” which was presented as if it were a standalone technique. In reality, release principles exist within several contemporary techniques (such as Limón or Cunningham) rather than as a formal technique on its own. Presenting it otherwise felt misleading and unprofessional.
Because of this, I would be cautious if you are a student who is not already well educated in ballet and contemporary dance techniques, as you may receive unclear or potentially inaccurate technical guidance.
The organisation of the audition was also concerning. Around 18 candidates were being assessed by only two staff members, who appeared to be the examiners. This seemed insufficient for a fair evaluation. There was no visible exam board or panel.
We were told that cuts would be made after each of the three sessions, but in reality candidates were removed spontaneously during sessions, and no explanation or feedback was given to those who were rejected.
Overall, the process felt poorly organised and unprofessional, which was extremely disappointing for a higher education institution.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your audition experience did not meet your expectations. However, as an Institute we feel it is important to clarify a few points about our audition process.
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona delivers degree programmes validated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK. As a result, all teaching, learning and assessment are conducted in English and we are required to ensure that students meet an appropriate English language standard. Our English language requirement, IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, is clearly stated on our website. This level is typical for international higher education programmes delivered in English. It is possible to apply and audition before taking the English Language test, as we ask that students achieve their English Language qualification by 30 June.
All auditions are conducted in English to reflect the language of study on the programme. The lecturers who led your audition are both Spanish, so there may have been brief moments where they communicated with each other in Spanish. However, all instructions and direction to candidates were delivered in English.
Our audition classes are led by experienced lecturers and professional dancers who perform and teach internationally at a high level. The technical content presented during auditions reflects established professional training approaches in ballet and contemporary dance and is delivered by staff with significant professional and academic expertise.
In terms of organisation, it is standard practice in performing arts auditions for candidates to be assessed continuously throughout the class. As part of this process, candidates may be released at different stages once the panel has gathered enough information to make a decision about their suitability for the programme; the possibility of cuts during the audition process are clearly stated within the audition guide.
We understand that audition processes can be demanding and sometimes disappointing when the outcome is not what a candidate hoped for. However, maintaining clear standards during auditions is essential for a professional training environment.
We are pleased that many applicants each year share very positive feedback about the professionalism and intensity of our audition process, and we wish you the best in your future dance training and career.
Great shows. Here i saw: midsummer night's dream, government inspector, a series of public apologies, the moors, rhinocerous, and some drummer show. My all time favourite was the government inspector! I recommend.🤩
Great school, wonderful teachers, and wonderful people.
My daughter had a blast during her summer intensive week.
She already misses the place and her classmates.
Will be back next year and for Easter.
Fantástica!
I loved my experience studying at the IAB. I’ve made life long friends and I’m continuing to have a successful career. Beautiful teachers who are tough enough on you to help you reach your potential and a stunning location!!
If one place can offer you more than just dancing, singing, acting then IAB is it. IAB gives you an experience like no other and one I will be forever be grateful for. I moved to another country, built friendships with people from all over the world and became so much more open minded about other ways of life. The location is the perfect place to study; allowing you to live next to the sea, in a beautiful destination, embracing the outdoors which brought me so much happiness and clear headspace throughout my studies.
Honestly THE BEST. I spend three years studying at this school for a BA honours in musical theatre. Not only did I have the most amazing experiences, meet the best of friends but I clearly learnt something because since leaving IAB I have worked non stop in the professional industry. The teachers are incredibly knowledgeable, the studios are second to none, the production value is on par with professional projects and the schools values, general energy and location is to die for. So for any potential student reading some of these sad sabotaging reviews... ignore because lockdown has clearly got to them a little too much.
I honestly wouldn’t even give them one star. If you’re not serious about advancing your career and just want to have drinks in Spain then this is the school for you. In my opinion they are unprofessional and do nothing to prepare you for anything. Also a little racist but who wasn’t expecting that. Please go somewhere else if you love yourself.
I just graduated this academic year, (2020), and have really enjoyed my 3 years studying BA HONS Acting at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. One of the best aspects about the university is the array of diverse international students, not to mention the international teachers that help make this a warm and friendly community.
Another great aspect about the university, if not the most remarkable characteristic, is the teachers. The teachers really push and generously spend their time to help the students prosper in their craft. With this, I would like to give a special thanks to the acting department, especially Drew Mulligan and Jonny Floyd who have made my time at the institute an unforgettable journey.
I graduated two years ago from the BA(Hon) Acting program, and it was a great experience! I met some of the most wonderful people from all around the world, set the basis of my acting knowledge with very qualified, committed and caring teachers and achieved a perfect level of English, that is opening lots of doors for me at the moment! I would definitely recommend it to everyone:)
Spent three years studying on the BA Acting Course, graduated in 2019 and loved all of it. Felt very supported by all teaching staff who helped me develop as an actor. For a university that has not been open for a very long time they attract an incredible range of teachers and lecturers! Also the cultural mix of students is unbelievably wide.
I graduated from the BA Acting course at the IAB in 2018. I can honestly say that joining this university was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Not only is this course extremely enjoyable, but it is filled with a great variety of high quality classes, which allowed us to excel as performers. The teachers are all fantastic industry professionals, and the international community is simply wonderful. The IAB creates such a warm, supportive atmosphere, that it truly feels like you are part of a family.
When I first arrived, I was still suffering from an old injury. Everyone I met was compassionate, and their support unparalleled. I was given the opportunity to adapt to my needs, allowing me to heal without hindering my education in any way. Through my wonderful teachers and friends, I was able to overcome my adversity, and make the most of the excellent education offered. I grew as an actress, and as a person in ways I never expected.
I can highly recommend this university to anyone wishing to embark upon a career in the performing arts.
