I am 100% dissatisfied with my experience at the entrance exam for the BA Contemporary Dance programme at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. I am only reviewing the audition process, as that is the only experience I had with the institution.
First of all, the English language requirement (IGCSE, IB, or equivalent) has a very high minimum grade just to be eligible to apply. For an international performing arts programme, this felt unnecessarily restrictive.
During the audition itself, a significant amount of Spanish was spoken by the staff, which could easily make non-Spanish speaking candidates uncomfortable or confused in what is supposed to be an English-language programme.
The ballet class also included some questionable technical instructions. For example, there were moments where the arm positioning during turns from fifth position did not align with standard classical ballet technique. This raises concerns about the level of technical clarity being demonstrated in an exam setting.
The contemporary section of the audition was also questionable. It was described as being based on “release technique,” which was presented as if it were a standalone technique. In reality, release principles exist within several contemporary techniques (such as Limón or Cunningham) rather than as a formal technique on its own. Presenting it otherwise felt misleading and unprofessional.
Because of this, I would be cautious if you are a student who is not already well educated in ballet and contemporary dance techniques, as you may receive unclear or potentially inaccurate technical guidance.
The organisation of the audition was also concerning. Around 18 candidates were being assessed by only two staff members, who appeared to be the examiners. This seemed insufficient for a fair evaluation. There was no visible exam board or panel.
We were told that cuts would be made after each of the three sessions, but in reality candidates were removed spontaneously during sessions, and no explanation or feedback was given to those who were rejected.
Overall, the process felt poorly organised and unprofessional, which was extremely disappointing for a higher education institution.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your audition experience did not meet your expectations. However, as an Institute we feel it is important to clarify a few points about our audition process.
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona delivers degree programmes validated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK. As a result, all teaching, learning and assessment are conducted in English and we are required to ensure that students meet an appropriate English language standard. Our English language requirement, IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, is clearly stated on our website. This level is typical for international higher education programmes delivered in English. It is possible to apply and audition before taking the English Language test, as we ask that students achieve their English Language qualification by 30 June.
All auditions are conducted in English to reflect the language of study on the programme. The lecturers who led your audition are both Spanish, so there may have been brief moments where they communicated with each other in Spanish. However, all instructions and direction to candidates were delivered in English.
Our audition classes are led by experienced lecturers and professional dancers who perform and teach internationally at a high level. The technical content presented during auditions reflects established professional training approaches in ballet and contemporary dance and is delivered by staff with significant professional and academic expertise.
In terms of organisation, it is standard practice in performing arts auditions for candidates to be assessed continuously throughout the class. As part of this process, candidates may be released at different stages once the panel has gathered enough information to make a decision about their suitability for the programme; the possibility of cuts during the audition process are clearly stated within the audition guide.
We understand that audition processes can be demanding and sometimes disappointing when the outcome is not what a candidate hoped for. However, maintaining clear standards during auditions is essential for a professional training environment.
We are pleased that many applicants each year share very positive feedback about the professionalism and intensity of our audition process, and we wish you the best in your future dance training and career.
Great shows. Here i saw: midsummer night's dream, government inspector, a series of public apologies, the moors, rhinocerous, and some drummer show. My all time favourite was the government inspector! I recommend.🤩
My daughter loves their classes. The shows they put are pretty great also.
Great school, wonderful teachers, and wonderful people.
My daughter had a blast during her summer intensive week.
She already misses the place and her classmates.
Will be back next year and for Easter.
Fantástica!
